Hydrogen Economy

One of the ongoing themes of our lab is the understanding of transitions to future energy systems. These involve the uptake and installation of new technologies, as well as the realignment of existing economic and social activities. One particular long-standing vision of a future energy system is the “Hydrogen Economy” (in Japanese, the “Hydrogen Society” 水素社会). Our research in this field considers technological progress and barriers, environmental and resource requirements, and social acceptance.

Survey and Evaluation of Progress to a Hydrogen Economy

Our recent work, led by Jiazhen Yap (PhD), has focused on the indicators of progress, and community understanding and expert opinion of the hydrogen economy. Ongoing results will be updated on this site.

Costs and configurations of the Hydrogen Economy

Moe Thiri Zun (PhD Candidate from 2024) is also focused on hydrogen – specifically the production of hydrogen from renewable electricity via electrolysis of water (Green Hydrogen). Her recent work looks at the cost reduction potential across various technologies and countries, based on project data. You can examine her work at: https://green-hydrogen-analysis.onrender.com/
